Introduction to World Telecommunication & Information Society Day 2018

The Internet, today, is another important need of human. There are several ways of communication available such as letters, telephones, mobiles, telegraphs but the internet is the widely used for communication and spreading or collecting information. The use of internet and other Information & Communication Technologies (ICT) can bring societies, economies as well as one of the ways to bridge the digital divide. The first International Telegraph was signed on 17th May 1865 and also the creation of International Telecommunication Union was done on this day. And therefore 17th May is celebrated as World Telecommunication Day every year since 1969.

History of World Telecommunication & Information Society Day 2018

In November 2005, the World’s governments took a meeting on Information Society called upon the UN General Assembly to declare 17 May as World Information Society Day. This day was declared to focus on the importance of ICT and the wide range of issues related to the Information Society. In March 2006 it was declared that the date 17th May will be celebrated as World Information Society Day. It was declared that both the days World Telecommunication & Information Society will be celebrated together on 17th May every year by the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference in Turkey in November 2006.

Importance and Significance of Celebrating World Telecommunication & Information Society Day 2018

The World Telecommunication Day focuses on making national policies stronger, reduce the technological differences, promote connectivity, faster global interoperability of systems and to curb on physical distances globally through internet, television, phone etc. The celebration of this day increases awareness of the positive communication technology among people. It has the purpose to make the information and communication accessible easily to more people in remote and rural areas.

World Telecommunication & Information Society Day Theme 2018

World Telecommunication & Information Society Day is celebrated every year with a theme. The themes in previous few years were like “Telecommunications and Humanitarian Assistance”, “Time for Action”, “Connection persons with disabilities” etc. The theme for the year 2017 was “Big Data for Big Impact”. The theme for the year 2018 is “Enabling the positive use of Artificial Intelligence for All”. The theme of WTISD-18 and will focus on the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to accelerate the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The purpose of celebrating World Telecommunication & Information Society Day are to spread awareness of the importance of communication in our lives, to educate people how communication affects and exists in our lives, to stimulate reflection and exchanges of ideas on the theme adopted by the Council, and to debate the different facts of the theme with all partners in society. Activities undertaken by the ITU Membership will contribute towards building political momentum to embrace Big Data and leverage insights to identify new opportunities to creatively address sustainable development challenges.
