Beginning of the speech on White Revolution in India
Good morning everyone, honourable chief guests, respected principal, teachers, and my dear friends. Today I am going to talk about the white revolution of India and how it helped to grow the economy of India. Now, I would like to start my speech.
White Revolution which is also called as Operation Flood was world’s biggest dairy development programme started in India whose main goal was to make India self-sufficient in dairy production. The Operation Flood concentrated on making a national level network of milk producers and consumers to fulfill the rising demand for dairy products and maintaining the price variations, by cutting out the middle-men, between the milk producers and the consumers. The Operation Flood has main components which ensured the successful deployment of the programme and those are, increasing the overall milk production, increasing the rural incomes and providing the fair prices for consumers.
Verghese Kurien: Architect of White Revolution in India
Verghese Kurien is called as the architect of White Revolution in India who gave the idea of Operation flood which became the world’s biggest dairy development programme. He was the chairman and founder of Amul. He helped establish the Amul cooperative, which is India’s largest dairy food brand today. The reason behind the success of Amul was the production of milk powder from the widely available buffalo-milk, instead of cow milk which was short in supply in India. Later in 1965, he founded the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) and replicated the Amul’s successful “Anand Pattern” nationwide. He also helped to make India self-sufficient in the edible oil sector.
Verghese Kurien was an icon of India’s cooperative movement and the dairy industry. He not only made India self-sufficient in the milk and edible oil sector but also helped to get India out of poverty, unemployment, lack of nutrition, breaking down the caste barrier and opened the gates for education, health, and employment.
The White Revolution/ Operation flood took place in three phases, which are as follows,
Phase 1 of the White Revolution
The phase 1 of the Operation Flood took place in the period of 1970 to 1980. The goal of phase 1 was to improve the organized dairy sector in metro cities by linking India’s 18 premier milk sheds in the four major metropolitan cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai. During the phase 1, the huge sale of skimmed milk powder and butter oil took place which was donated by the European Union through the World Food Program. The overall cost of the phase one was 116 crores.
Phase 2 of the White Revolution
The phase 1 of the Operation Flood took place in the period of 1981 to 1985. In phase 2 the total number of major milk sheds increased from 18 to 136. By the end of phase 2 in 1985, the number of milk producers in rural areas increased tremendously up to 4,250,000 from 43000 villages.
Phase 3 of the White Revolution
The phase 1 of the Operation Flood took place in the period of 1985 to 1996. The phase 3 of the Operation Flood showed a huge improvement in the scenario. The use of latest technology in milk processing, artificial insemination facilities of the cattle, increased innovations that helped to maintain the health of the cattle helped to make a huge improvement in the production. The number of milk sheds also increased to 143. The invention of new vaccines for cattle also played an important role in the increased milk production.
The Operation Flood was also criticized because of the importance was given to the cattle breeds from foreign countries over native Indian cattle breeds because even though the foreign breeds gave better higher yield, they needed more care, food and they were also not suitable to Indian conditions.
The White Revolution not only made India self-sufficient in the dairy production sector but also helped India to get out of the poverty, unemployment, and malnutrition. Verghese Kurien will always be remembered for his huge contribution in the upliftment of our country.
