Childhood and Early Life
The full name of Stephen Hawking is Stephen William Hawking. Stephen Hawking was born on 8th January 1942(DOB) in Oxford, London. The interesting fact about the date of birth of Stephen Hawking is that he was born on the day that marks the 300 years of the death of Galileo. His parents had four children and Stephen was the oldest. Stephen Hawking came from an intellectual family. His father’s name was Frank Hawking and he studied at Oxford University as a medical researcher, while his mother, Isobel Hawking, was one of the first women to attend the university in the 1930s.

When Stephen Hawking was 11 years old he took admission in St Albans School, which is a local public school in Hertfordshire. When he was 17 years old he went to the University of Oxford. In October 1962, Stephen entered in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP) at the University of Cambridge. He wrote his thesis for Ph.D. on the topic of “Properties of Expanding Universes” and became a research fellow in 1965 and later Fellow for Distinction in Science in 1969 at Gonville & Caius College.

In 1970, along with Roger Penrose, Stephen Hawking showed that Einstein’s general theory of relativity implied space and time would have a beginning in the Big Bang and an end in black holes. He also stated that the universe has no edge or boundary in imaginary time, which means that the way the universe began was completely determined by the laws of science. He was also working on a possible resolution to the black hole information paradox.
In 1974, that Hawking discovered that black holes weren’t vacuums like previously assumed. Talking about the quantum theory, he stated that the appearance of black holes being black is wrong. They are not completely black and they actually give off a slight glow, because of the quantum effects near the horizon of a black hole. Hawking demonstrated that matter can escape the gravitational force of a collapsed star in the form of radiation thus giving birth to Hawking radiation.

In 1966, Stephen won the Adams Prize for his essay ‘Singularities and the Geometry of Space-time’. In 1968 he moved to the Institute of Astronomy and later in 1973 moving back to Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP) to work as a research assistant where he published his first academic book, The Large Scale Structure of Space-Time, with George Ellis.

Stephen Hawking ASL Disease and Death
In 1963, Stephen was diagnosed with ALS, a form of Motor Neurone Disease, shortly after his 21st birthday. This disease left him fully paralyzed. Most of his life he was wheelchair bound and was dependent on the computerized voice for communication. After fighting this disease for almost 50+ years, he died on 14th March 2018 in his home in Cambridge, England. Stephen Hawking has three children and three grandchildren.
