Early Life & Family of Kiran Bedi

Kiran Bedi is the daughter of father Mr. Prakash Lal Peshawaria and mother Mrs. Premlata Peshawaria. She was born on 9th June 1949(DOB) in Amritsar, Punjab. Kiran Bedi’s great great grandfather was a Lala Hargobind was a businessman who migrated from Peshawar(Now in Pakistan) to Amritsar, Punjab in 1860 and adopted the name Peshawaria. Her grandfather Lala Muni Lal was the most dynamic personality in her family and Kiran Bedi drew her inspiration from him. Her parents, father Prakash Lal and mother Premlata had four daughters named, Shashi, Kiran, Reeta, and Anu. Her parents thinking was way ahead of the time and they decided not to opt for the conventional upbringing of their daughters and to give them the best of the education.

In a time where daughters were considered as a liability because they have to give hefty dowries while their wedding, Kiran Bedi’s parents chose a different path. Despite facing many obstacles the parent did their best to make the girls excel in the academics as well as sports.

Kiran Bedi’s father Prakash Lal was an ace Tennis player, resulting in the interest in the daughters for the Tennis. All the daughters grew up to be independent to choose the career they want.

Kiran Bedi met her husband on the Tennis court where they both were members and tied the knot in 1972. Her husband Mr. Brij was a University tennis player, a former farmer and a textile engineer by profession. In September 1975 the couple was blessed with a daughter Saina, who is a TV Producer, Director General of the NGO, Indian Vision foundation and also studied law.

She was later married to Ruzbeh who is the son in law of Kiran Bedi. Her mother who was very disciplined and determined, unfortunately, passed way in May 1999, causing a shock to the whole family. Also in January 2016 Mr. Brij Bedi, husband of Kiran Bedi passed away.

Education Of Kiran Bedi | Educational Qualification

When we speak about education Kiran Bedi is one of those who started her education in the early stage of her life. In 1968, she did BA degree from government college of women, Amritsar and then pursued a master degree in political science from Punjab University and graduated as a topper. In 1988, she also obtained a bachelor degree in law from Delhi University. Later in 1993, she completed a Ph.D. in social science from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi.

Kiran Bedi and Tennis Career

Long before she was famous for her work as a police officer, Kiran Bedi was famous on the Tennis court. Playing a game like tennis is not an easy task. No doubt Sania Mirza is a great tennis player and she is presenting our nation at the top-level but yes, Kiran Bedi was also the one who has given her everything for tennis. In her teenage, she started playing tennis along with her sisters.

She was inspired by her father as her father was a great tennis player. In 1964 she played her first tournament. She was so much passionate about her game that she has cut her hair as it was interrupting her game. She has won many champions trophy in tennis at the national level. There are many achievements of Kiran Bedi in Tennis sports and some of them are as follows,

  • Kiran Bedi has won the All-India intervarsity tennis title for three years running, with her younger sister Reeta Peshawaria.
  • Won All-India Hard Court Tennis Championship in 1974.
  • Won National Women’s Lawn Tennis Championship at Chandigarh in 1976.
  • Represented India twice against Sri Lanka and won the Lionel Fonseka Memorial Trophy for the country.
  • Won the first-ever women’s festival sports title for Delhi in 1976 bagging three gold and two silver medals with her younger sister Anu Peshawaria.

These were just a few of her achievements in the Tennis. The list of her achievements as a Tennis player is very long.

Professional Career of Kiran Bedi as an IPS Officer

She continued playing tennis until the age of 30. But she didn’t just stop on tennis she was also focusing on Indian police officer exams while playing tennis. Become starting a career as a police officer, she was a lecturer of Political Science at the Khalsa College for Women in Amritsar in 1970.

On 16 July 1972, she started her police training in national academy of administration in Missouri. She was the first woman in a batch of 80 men to become a first IPS officer. She made all women feel proud and became an inspiration for young generation girls. She proved that in every way that women can do better than men and can stand with men in every field.

Her first posting was as a Subdivisional Police Officer Chanakyapuri Subdivision. Her district police assignments in the West and North District of Delhi Police confirmed her as a police officer who believes and practices participative, community, transparent, preventive, reformative, corrective, resourceful, innovative, sensitive, tough, motivating and systematic policing who never compromises here ethics and rules.

During the 9th Asian Games, Kiran Bedi was assigned the duty of Deputy Commissioner Police Traffic. This is when she got the nickname “Crane Bedi” for her excessive use cranes to tow away the wrongly parked vehicles.

 Kiran Bedi- A Social Activist

She has also done many social activities. She was a great social commentator, social trainer. Recently we have seen her on TV. she was hosting a court show During 2008-2011 named Aap Ki Kachheri. Though this show she was helping victims to get their rights. And this show got a good positive response from every corner of India.

She also launched a website where people can file their complaints if the local police are not ready to file their complaints. Indeed, she was a great speaker also she has been invited to many schools and colleges to speak on education, domestic violence, and many others. As a speaker, she was also invited to Washington by TED Talk (Technology, Entertainment, Design) to deliver a speech.

In 2007 she launched The Nav Jyoti Delhi Foundation. This foundation received strong support and response from community people. Through this foundation, she helped over nearly 25000 drugs addicts and alcohol addicts to get out of this addiction by providing good treatment. She has not just saved a drug or alcohol addicts but saved their families too.

We must say, she has given a ray of hope to dream big by providing education to street children and slum kids. It also established 200 single teacher schools, healthcare facilities, counseling centers for unprotected sections of India. She has supported equal opportunities for women in education and property ownership. Especially for women in rural areas, she was like a god.

We have noticed many men in rural areas they always stop their women from getting an education. Dowry issues are generally seen in rural areas they beat women badly or make them do suicide. Bedi is the women who raised her voice against women harassment. Through her show Aap ki Kachehari, she resolved many problems of different areas of people. There are many social workers, we heard their stories about social work but Kiran Bedi is a true and successful social worker.

Political Career of Kiran Bedi

Like in social work, she also started her career in politics. To stand against corruption she joined AAP (Aam Aadami Party) in 2010 to support anti-corruption India Movement. Later in 2015, she joined BJP (Bhartiya Janata Party). After Narendra Modi won the elections and became a prime minister she stated that she is ready to become a CM candidate of Delhi if such opportunity was given to her.

Kiran Bedi’s Achievements, Awards, and Books

If we talk about her achievement she has achieved so much respect from people by winning so many awards for her activities. She made many reforms in Tihar Jail which got global appreciation. For her work of reforming the Tihar Jail, she was awarded Ramon Magsaysay Award in 1994. Take an eye on some of the awards she has achieved.

She honored with Asia Region Award for drug prevention and control by the International organization of good Templars, Norway. Cadet officer award by national cadet cop for her amazing performance in NCC cadet. And many more. She has written many books like “It’s always possible”, “I dare”, “Indian Police”, “Leadership and Governance”. Though these books she is sharing her ideas and experiences to motivate youth.

Kiran Bedi Retirement &  Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry(Pondicherry)

After working an officer for 35 years Kiran Bedi took voluntary retirement in 2007 as Director General, Bureau of Police Research and Development. On 22 May 2016, Kiran Bedi was appointed as the Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry(Pondicherry), which is her current post and occupation. Kiran Bedi has shown us what the real women empowerment is.
