Taj Mahal is one of the greatest monuments and most popular tourist destinations in India and around the world. Each year thousands of tourists visit the Taj Mahal to witness its beauty. The tourism in India has flourished because of the Taj Mahal. Taj Mahal is the epitome of the Mughal Architecture. The literal meaning of the Taj Mahal is “The crown of the palace.”

History of Taj Mahal

Taj Mahal is located in Agra in Delhi, India on the banks of the Yamuna river. In 1632, Mughal emperor Shah Jahan ordered to build a huge grave in the remembrance of his loving wife Mumtaz Mahal(Arjuband Banu). He wanted to make the monument memorable for hundreds of years and hence he went through many architectural designs.

He finally chose the one made by the Persian Muslim architect Ustad Ahmad Lahauri who is believed to be the head architect of the Taj Mahal. Taj Mahal was declared a winner of the New7Wonders of the World (2000–2007) initiative and became one the 7 wonders of the world in 2007. It is also a World Heritage Site.

Architectural Features and Cost of Taj Mahal

Shah Jahan wanted only the best in the world to make the Taj Mahal. Taj Mahal is the result of Persian and early Mughal architecture. It was entirely made with the ivory-white marble and valuable rocks. The estimated cost to build the Taj Mahal was around in 1653 was around 32 million rupees at that time, which is almost 53 million rupees in 2015. That is almost 900 million US dollars.

The four minarets around the monuments are one of the main features of Mughal architecture and give Taj Mahal it’s immense beauty. The minarets are slightly tilted outwards to protects the dome of Taj Mahal in calamities like an earthquake so that the minarets won’t fall on the dome. The famous dome of the Taj Mahal gives it a beautiful look. The tomb is the main focus of the Taj Mahal and it is located at the base of it.

The walls of the Taj Mahal are decorated with the calligraphy of Persian poems. It took almost 21 years to complete the construction of Taj Mahal(1632 to 1653).

Taj Mahal Pollution

Due to the pollution of the banks of the Yamuna river and the acid rain caused by the Mathura oil refinery near Agra, Taj Mahal started to turn yellow.  Government of India has created a safe zone around the 10,400 square kilometers to stop the damage caused by the pollution. The safe zone is called Taj Trapezium Zon(TPZ).
