In the later part, we will show how you can integrate / fuse different dance styles to create a winning dance performance. So, let’s get started…

How to Choose Best Dance Theme Idea

Here we are giving you ideas in the Indian context, means theme which Indian audience may like the most. Though tips can be used by anyone by replacing their individual country or state context.

1. Current Affairs

Check latest achievements and issues in society, what’s good or bad happening in society. Try to design a dance theme based on it. Let’s take an example. Right now in India, we are celebrating the success of Indian Military surgical strikes, take this as a center of the idea. Based on this you can have military or commando theme showing struggle and triumph of our army.

The second example, Indian people raising voice on Feminism. It’s a good time to be part of the movement by having a compelling dance performance showing how women are cruising through a male dominated world. Portray our female athletes in it show their dedication, struggle, and hunger to win.

The third example, show how our differently abled olympian won gold medals. Celebrate Mariyappan Thangavelu and Devendra Jhajharia.

Raise your voice aginst racial discrimination, rapes, corruption. One may not agree on this due to their political inclination but you can show how a single man like Anna Hazare or P.M. Modi can install fresh hope in a billion on Indians.

2. Song Selection

Do not choose the song before deciding the topic and theme. First, choose a theme, do some research about it, in process of research itself you find a couple of compelling songs that suits the theme. Choose songs which have some emotional quotient to it.

3. Props, Getup etc

If you are doing a dance performance based on poverty then don’t use branded clothes, it simply conflicts with the idea. Your getup should reflect the reality of the topic.

4. Ending

You should end the performance in such way that audience should either get up from the seat and cheer or they find themselves numb after it. How to do that? If you have inspirational songs then try to end dance at a crescendo. And if you have an emotional song then end it with silence.

Now you know how to choose perfect dance theme and songs now let’s see the list of ideas. A couple of them we have shown above. You can use these themes and ideas for high school, college or for any other competition for that matter. Same way you can opt these for solo or group performances, surely you need to choreograph accordingly.

But why not to try dance styles from another part of worlds like Russian Ballet, Cuban Salsa, Brazilian Samba, Chinese Dragon Dance, Japanese Kabuki, Waltz etc. Here we are trying to explain few on them.

1. Tinikling

It is a traditional Philippine dance originated during Spanish colonial era. The dance involves two people beating, tapping, and sliding bamboo poles on the ground and against each other in coordination with one or more dancers who step over and in between the poles in a dance. This dance form got the name from a bird called “tikling”.

I have seen this dance form in some Indian movie songs, I am not remembering it now. If you remember, please let us know in comments. This dance form is difficult and takes a lot of training. But it can be great for competition as other teams may not wanting to put that much effort to learn such difficult dance. Plus, you can fuse it with hip hop to make it more interesting.

In the given video link , these college students gave an awesome performance, check reaction from the audience. Skip video to 02:41 and you will see how audience liked it, continue to watch further to see how they mixed up hip hop with it in the end.

2. Cossack Dance

Hopak or Gopak or Cossack is Ukrainian dance form. This dance also is known as “National Dance of Ukraine”.
